Whirlybirds – The Ideal Roof Ventilation Solution

In the heat of Queensland summers, temperatures often reach well above 30 degrees – and our homes can become very hot without proper ventilation. Did you know - The air temperature in your roof void can reach upwards of twice the outside temperature during the summer months?

The solution – Whirlybirds, otherwise known as roof ventilators. These devices use the wind to power a turbine that extracts warm air from in between your home's ceiling and roofing membrane. A Whirlybird will also work to pull cooler air from outside and into the ceiling, providing much-needed relief. By creating cooler temperatures in the ceiling void area, you reduce how much work your air conditioner has to do, and this in turn lowers your electricity bill.

Roof ventilators work best in a system including insulation and vents. Because hot air rises, a Whirlybird should be positioned at the highest point of your roof for better airflow. We often discover that whirlybirds have been installed incorrectly in homes we visit in the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas that we service. Many home owners are unaware that installing vents to the soffits (the underside of overhanging roof eaves) of their homes will allow their roof ventilators to function more productively.

When it comes to commercial ventilation solutions, we can supply and install commercial-sized Whirlybirds of 600mm in diameter, while domestic Whirlybirds are usually 300mm in diameter. Both types come in a range of colours to match your roof, including Colorbond shades and brushed zinc.
